What’s a good cat name?

My birthday is next Wednesday and Keli, as an early birthday present, took me to a Pets LifeLine in Sonoma (it’s a pet shelter) and let me pick out a cat. This is one of the MANY reasons why I love her to pieces, she is one of the most unselfish people I have ever met. She’s allergic to cats and STILL let me get one. She likes cats but because she’s allergic to them she is much more of a dog person. So the simple fact that she even considered letting me/us get a cat made me feel very loved.

So the cat I picked out is 5 months old. She’s what “they” call a “Torby” because her breed is a mix of a Tabby and of a Tortoise Shell cat. She’s quite pretty. She’s a shorthaired cat and is pretty spunky. The only problem is the pet shelter gave her a name of “Missy” which annoys the crap out of me. I knew a girl in school named Missy who annoyed me so the Missy name has got to go.

But I need help thinking of a name for a spunky female cat. Preferable not something obnoxiously pet-like such as “Patches” and not something like “Joe”. Of cource, naming a female cat Joe would be pretty cool…

Here are the options so far:

    • “Brody” – This was my idea. Brody is the name of the lead singer from The Distillers but that’s not why I thought of it.

“Black” – When asked what she thought the cat’s name should be, Bailey promptly replied with this one.

“Something food related” – This was Keli’s vote. I think she actually said it should be “Twizzler Feet”. She claims to be joking but I’m not so sure about that…
  • Please post in the comments if you have any name possibilities for our new cat. I’ll post a picture of it as soon as I can find the cable to hook my digital camera to the computer.

    1. My theory is that cats’ character should strongly guide their naming, so you should live with her for a few weeks before you settle on a name. During that time, you should refer to her as “Fluffy,” because I also firmly believe that all pets (especially inapplicable ones, like turtles) should spend a certain breaking-in period being “Fluffy.” It’s like a fraternity initiation.

    2. food related: “Tastes Like Chicken” and then for short you could call her “Chickie” or something.

my friend in Sacramento had a cat named Osama Bin Laden. That was a hoot until the cat started peeing on everything.

    3. I once had a torby, and her name was Mudd. I miss her little muddy face.

    4. Mudd? Thats a good one. I really need to pick a name for her. This is rediculous. I’m not in TOO much of a hurry because she doens’t answer to the name the shelter gave her and she doesn’t answer to “Kitty” right now which is what we’ve been calling her. Any other ideas?

    5. Just searching the internet on Torby related items. I got my Torby 3 years ago – she’s quite hyper, spunky, smart and lovable! It must be genetic. When we got her she was so “off the wall” that we named her after a cat in the sci-fi book “The Cat Who Walks Through Walls”. So, the name Pixel stuck. I’m not one to name my cats with common names. I think you should pick a name that represents her personality.
