I stumbled across this website on my lunch break today called Books for Soldiers. It’s a website with a HUGE message board where soldiers who are in country in Iraq and Afgahnistan can post for their commerades or themselves things they need or want. There are Sergents who have posted requests for soldiers under their command who never receive encouraging letters or care packages. Some posts are soldiers who would like a DVD to lift their spirits when they’re not being shot at. But most simply want some supportive pen pals and possible a good book or two while some just would like a prepaid phone card so they can call home to their families.
Some of the posts are simply heartbreaking but the good news is this is something that everyone can help with. It does cost a good amount to ship a care package halfway across the world but it only costs a few bucks to send an encouraging letter to a soldier.
If there’s anyway you can help out by sending a letter or care package, or even something so simple as to spread the word about this website, please do it. Regardless of your viewpoint on these wars, the soldiers are in the eye of the storm and have deserved that used book that is collecting dust on your book shelf.
