Straight but not narrow minded

The United Church of Christ tried to pay to have this ad played on big name TV networks but it was deemed “too controversial”. Watch the ad for your self and see if you think this ad is too controversial. The ad shows “a church with a couple of skinhead-type bouncers blocking the front door to all but “acceptable” families, while turning away gay couples, minority group members, etc., followed by the message ‘Jesus didn’t turn people away. Neither do we.’ “

“Because this commercial touches on the exclusion of gay couples and other minority groups by other individuals and organizations,” reads an explanation from CBS, “and the fact the Executive Branch has recently proposed a Constitutional Amendment to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, this spot is unacceptable for broadcast on the [CBS and UPN] networks.”

So, let me see if I understand this. NBC, CBS and UPN don’t want to offend people with messages of acceptance and tolerance? What about all the people that live in Jesusland? Don’t they go to church? Don’t they want to better the image of religion? I mean, so what if we’re ripping away basic, every-day civil rights from gay couples. So what if I don’t watch prime time TV in front of Bailey because I don’t want her exposed to all of the crap that is on there. So what if millions of viewers get offended every holiday season by the outrageously asinine geneder stereotypes potrayed in commercials. So what if we, as a nation, are slowly killing ourselves because we are fed these messages that just fuel our gluttony, and we are too stupid to close our mouths when we stare up at the rain. And since when the hell does the Executive Brance of the United States get to influence what commercial is on the idiot-box?

But hold the phone and stop the presses if a church wants to let the mal-treated and frowned upon of society know that they can go to a place and be accepted for the person they are instead of who they choose to be intimate with.

Listen up all you Red-Staters, why don’t I see the 51% of you who gave Bush his “mandate” rioting in the streets over this? Where is the outpouring of tolerance and religious compassion and values? Are churches and the messages they offer only good enough for straight white people? If you don’t feel that way, then why aren’t you demanding this ad be played to have something positive on the damn idiot-box for once? Why are you, again, sitting on your asses when the big media conglomerates are deciding what is too controversial for you? Where are all of you, like myself, that feel that religious institutions are unfairly labled as bigoted and close minded by society?

How can this whole issue not piss you off? We live in a country that was founded on the Freedom of Speech and now, a church can’t pay an ungodly sum of money to welcome the downtroden, but Macy’s can pay an ungodly sum of money to shove their glittery wares of capitalistic oppression in your face?

If you want to do something to let your voice be heard about this, go sign a petition.

I was fucking floored by this announcement.

But of course, it’s controversial because they’re telling it like it is: the vast majority of self-proclaimed Christians in this country aren’t.

Christians sometimes do not like to look at themselves in those levels.

Now, I consider myself a Christian. I was raised going to a non-denominational Christian church. I don’t go to church anymore but it’s something that I no longer feel guilty about.

I try not to label people because I know that there will always be someone in a group that differs from the accepted norm of that group. But there are things that I look at, just as everyone does, that seriously makes me have to question the intentions of people.
