As with most people, I first heard the name “Barack Obama” after his speech at the Democratic National Convention. I was poking around online earlier today and found this speech that Barack Obama delivered to the audience at the Knox College Commencement ceremony. And so if we do nothing in the face of globalization, more people will continue to lose their health care. Fewer kids will be able to afford this diploma you’re about to receive.
More companies like United won’t be able to provide pensions for their employees. And those Maytag workers will be joined in the unemployment line by any worker whose skill can be bought and sold on the global market.
Today, I’m here to tell you what most of you already know. This isn’t us. This isn’t how our story ends - not in this country. America is a land of big dreamers and big hopes.It is this hope that has sustained us through revolution and civil war, depression and world war, a struggle for civil and social rights and the brink of nuclear crisis. And it is because of our dreamers that we have emerged from each challenge more united, more prosperous, and more admired than ever before.
The more I read about Obama and the more of his transcripts I read the more I think he would make a good presidential candidate. I was talking to a co-worker, Alan, who said he thinks Obama should wait to run until the 2012 elections to get more experience “under his belt.” In any case, I’ll for sure be watching out for Obama in the future to see where his political career takes him.
