Let's Play A Game

I love to write. You all know that. But I also love to hear the creativity flow from other people – it’s energizing to me!

I was doing some writing last night… well actually, to be more precise, I was typing and my brain was unloading some random idea. When I was done, I liked what I had written, but I realized there were a lot of details left to figure out.

Why don’t you read the snippet I wrote tonight and then I’ll explain the “rules” of this game:

Jeremiah Johansson woke with a start. Before he could get his bearings he heard it: that ceaseless scratching and scraping sound. Suddenly remembering the source of the sound, he jumped up off of the cold, concrete floor that his face had been pressed against a moment earlier.

Not knowing where he was, only that it was completely dark, he turned slowly in a circle hoping for a clue of any kind. All that he found was a narrow window up near the ceiling. He moved closer towards it, feeling in front of him with his hands for something to stand on. Jeremiah found a flat surface he hoisted himself up to look through the window. All he could see was a low layer of fog languidly stretching itself across a long empty field in the stillness of the cold twilight.

Squinting his eyes, he tried to survey the ground below the window but found no help from the light of a crescent moon. As he resigned himself to the prospect of not being any closer to answers, he stopped suddenly, hearing the strange scratching sound again. Leaning forward, he pressed his face against the concrete edges of the window but had no hope of seeing the hand that shot toward him from the darkness below the window outside before it was too late.

He screamed out and realized too late that he was falling backwards. He hit the ground hard, waist first, followed by his lower and then upper back. As his shoulders rounded and made contact with the cold, unforgiving concrete, the force of the fall seemed to bear down against his forehead, driving his skull backwards into the ground.

And with a wet, muffled “SNAP” everything went dark again for Jeremiah Johansson.

I’m not going to steal your ideas or anything, but I thought it would be fun to have others share their ideas. All you have to do is be creative and leave a comment with your own thoughts on the following:

  • Who is Jeremiah Johansson?
  • Where is he?
  • What has happened to bring him there?
  • To whom or what did the hand belong?
  • What will happen to Jeremiah?

Be as creative as you want… that’s the point of the game!

Take my ideas, they probably suck and if you can turn them into something… woo-hooo!

    1. Who is Jeremiah Johansson: A dog. Yes, Canine. He’s not feeling with his hands, it’s his paws.
    2. He is in the hull of at boat. (I have actually stayed in a concrete boat for a weekend. There is one in our family).
    3. Jeremiah is on one of his many adventures at sea with his Nordic Owner, Wolfe (yes, also a family name for real).
    4. What has happened to bring him there: Jeremiah never leaves Wolfe, they are partners. They are all each other have. Unconditional love for both.
    5. To what/whom did the hand belong: The hand belonged to Wolfe, the fishing boat was taking on water ina severe storm, he was reaching down to grab Jeremiah out of being submerged and drowned.
    6. What will happen to Jeemiah: Jeremiah and Wolfe will not give in to the deep, dark sea. They are all each other have after “the accident” that left them alive together where all others perished.

    1. Jeremiah is a teenage boy.
    2. He is in a prison cell of some sort, in a third world country.
    3. He was on a mission trip with his church, and was arrested for his beliefs. He was knocked out and put into this cell.
    4. The hand belonged to an angel. The angel was protecting him from the guard, who was rounding the corner. If the guard would’ve found Jeremiah awake, or if Jeremiah would’ve spoken, he would’ve been killed.
    5. Jeremiah will spend many days in this cell. Overtime, he will find other members of his group are in the prison too. He will befriend the guard, turning him toward religion. Eventually, there will be a raid, and everyone will be set free. Most will go home, but Jeremiah will stay in the country and continue to spread The Word.

Dammit, just glimpsed K-dog’s reply, which is somewhat similar to mine:

Jeremiah is a stuffed raggedy-andy-style doll.

    He’s in a stormdrain.

A kid dropped him while playing in the street.

The hand is the kid that was playing with him.

He’s about to get a firecracker jammed into one of his seams; the kid ain’t his owner.

    * Who is Jeremiah Johansson?

International man of mystery… nah, I think he is vampire food.

    * Where is he?

Trapped in an underground lair where a covenant keeps food drugged during the day and lets them have the idea that escaping is possible because blood full of hope and adrenaline tastes just that much better.

    * What has happened to bring him there?

He was looking for his past and ended up finding something he should have never searched for.

    * To whom or what did the hand belong?

    His own sister.

    * What will happen to Jeremiah?

He will begin to develop powers beyond those of his captors.
