'May You Never Be Broken Again'
This past week some friends of ours lost one of their very close friends to cancer. Even though I had never meet this man, the positive impact he seems to have made on their lives makes me wish I had the opportunity. He sounds like he was a truly amazing person. It saddens me to see them – or any one – experience such a profound loss. Knowing that there’s nothing we can do to help doesn’t make things any better.
On my way into the office this morning, while thinking about the whole situation, I put in the last Alter Bridge album “Blackbird” and without even realizing what I was doing, skipped to track 8 – the title track for the album. With the windows rolled down, driving north on the freeway, I turned up the volume and sent happy thoughts out there, hoping that the pain of his passing becomes tolerable.
The lyrics are below and the song is at the bottom of this post if you care to listen to it.
The willow it weeps today
A breeze from the distance is calling your name
Unfurl your black wings and wait
Across the horizon it’s coming to sweep you away
It’s coming to sweep you awayLet the wind carry you home
Blackbird fly away
May you never be broken againThe fragile cannot endure
The wrecked and the jaded a place so impure
The static of this cruel world
Cause some birds to fly long before they’ve seen their day
Long before they’ve seen their dayLet the wind carry you home
Blackbird fly away
May you never be broken againBeyond the suffering you’ve known
I hope you find your way
May you never be broken againAscend may you find no resistance
Know that you’ve made such a difference
All you leave behind will live to the end
The cycle of suffering goes on
But the memories of you stay strong
Someday I too will fly and find you againLet the wind carry you home
Blackbird fly away
May you never be broken again
