The Best Song Covers, Part 1

The Best Song Covers, Part 1

Bob Seger is the guy most people consider a one-hit wonder because of his song “Like A Rock,” which was heavily used in Ford commercials for some time. Bob Seger’s songs conjure up memories of watching my dad tinker around in the garage, while he listened to Bob’s Greatest Hits CD.

The song “Turn The Page” has been my favorite Seger song ever since I really sat and listened to it, while watching my Dad replace the brakes on one of the family cars.

I have a love-hate relationship with Metallica but in spite of that, most of the time, their music kicks ass. They have a lot of truly great songs but one of my all-time favorites of theirs is actually a cover they did of Bob Seger’s “Turn The Page”.

What about you? Do you prefer the Bob Seger original or Metallica’s version?

  1. Seger’s ballad was a classic, haunting ode to the life of a rock star on the road. The lyrics bleed melancholy and self-loathing, and yet inspire and bolster budding musicians with a sense of empathy.

Metallica’s cover of this song brought the same message into the world of metal, morphing it into a blistering and titanic reinterpretation. They gave the song new life by pumping it with more power and emotion than Seger (in my opinion) had been capable of.

While Seger’s original version said “I’m a musician, and life sucks,” Metallica’s said “Yeah, my life sucks. So f***ing what?”

While the original will always have a place in my heart, Metallica’s cover still reigns supreme.

  2. By default the original is almost always better than the cover. Metallica has always loved to do covers and kudos to them for covering a “mainstream” song and doing a darn fine job of it…

I remember seeing a doc or feature and Lars saying he heard the Seger version on the radio and immediately connected the lyrics to Hetfield…supposedly that’s how the cover was born
