Thing 2 started Cub Scouts last week and he’s really excited about it. Almost as excited as I am! See, when I was little, I never got to do Scouts. I used to love sitting in the garage, while my dad tinkered around at his work bench, and look through my dad and uncle’s old Boy Scout handbooks.
To me, the coolest parts of Scouting was “learning how to flip pancakes by flipping the pan in the air” and whittling a block of wood. Oddly enough, years later, when I asked my dad why I never got to do Cub or Boy Scouts, he said, “You never asked or seemed interested enough.” Thinking back, I guess it never occurred to me that it was something I could do. I knew we didn’t have a lot of money most times, so I think part of me assumed that, just like with sports, Scouts was something out of our league at the time.
Thing 2 is already working on the things necessary to earn his Bobcat Badge, so he can start working on the next thing. Keli and I went to the local Scout Store to get his handbook over the weekend and I was like a little kid in a candy shop.
“Look, babe! They have Cub Scout wallets!”
“OOOH! POCKET KNIVES!”
“Pinewood Derby cars… awesome!”
I think I’m going to he’s going to really enjoy Scouts.
