Over the weekend I caved and watched Joss Whedon‘s latest addictive creation, “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog“. To be completely honest, it’s taken me this long becasue I simply couldn’t bring myself to watch Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser, M.D., The Harold and Kumar movies) in a musical role.

Finally, though, the thought of seeing NPH playing a mad scientist, seeking induction into the Evil League of Evil got the best of me. I’m now trying to justify the money to scramble and get the pieces together to go as Dr. Horrible for Halloween. If the boy didn’t already have his Thomas the Train costume, it would kick ass to dress him up as Captain Hammer, played by Nathan Fillian (FireFly, Serenity, Waitress), Dr. Horrible’s nemesis.

The story chronicles Dr. Horrible, “a low-rent super-villain,” struggling between his goal of being accepted into the Evil League of Evil, while at the same time trying to overcome his shyness and win the heart of a cutie who happens to be on the same laundry day schedule as himself.

The musical ensambles are very well done and while each episode comes in at under 16 minutes in length, they’re packed with snarky humor, catchy songs, and enough story line to keep you engaged, for those of you with exceptionally short attention spans.

In any case, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog has caught on and completely taken over a big chunk of the interwebs. So much so, that people, including my buddy Jase have submitted their own applications to join the Evil League of Evil. If your budget for world domination is very small, as is mine, you can show off your horribleness by printing out your very own Dr. Horrible pumpkin carving stencil.

Tomorrow tickets go on sale for the San Francisco screening of “Serenity” as part of the Can’t Stop The Serenity charity event. The screenign will take place on Saturday, June 21st, 2008 and last from 6-11pm.

Can’t Stop The Serenity is an event where “Fans of the science fiction movie ‘Serenity’ will be holding screenings in 51 cities in nine countries to raise money and awareness for Equality Now, an international women’s rights advocacy group. In its second year, Can’t Stop The Serenity looks to raise over $100,000 in donations for the charity.” You can read the entire press release online at PRWeb.com

In 1992, Jessica Neuwirth founded Equality Now (link opens external window) along with Navanethem Pillay and Feryal Gharahi, to address the gender disparity in the human rights movement, which had grown to dismiss violations as “cultural” or “private”. Issues such as domestic violence, rape, female genital mutilation, trafficking, and reproductive rights were not part of the agendas of established human rights organizations.

Neuwirth was a student of Lee Stearns, who founded the first Amnesty International chapter run exclusively by high school students. Stearns is Joss Whedon’s mother.

Whedon has been outspoken in his support of the organization and gender equality initiatives. You can hear his remarks on why equality is paramount in this YouTube clip (link opens external window), where he accepts a special recognition award from Equality Now.

In picking Equality Now as the organization receiving the proceeds of the global screenings, the organizers of Can’t Stop The Serenity voice their support of the work done around the world by EN.

For those of you who itemize your taxes each year, Equality Now is a 501(c)(3) organization and donations are tax deductible in the US.

Over $160,000 has been raised for Equality Now since 2006 from these screenings of Serenity.

For more information, check out Can’t Stop The Serenity and see if there is a screening in your town!
